Planting, Watering, and Trusting God for the Increase: A Reflection for Educators with Auntie Nats

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”1 Corinthians 3:6 (NIV)

As I listened to today’s sermon, my heart was stirred by how perfectly this verse speaks to the calling of educators, especially those serving in early childhood. Paul’s words remind us of a divine truth — every stage in the learning process carries purpose, but the ultimate growth comes from God alone.

Early childhood practitioners are often the first to plant the seeds of learning. In their hands, little hearts and curious minds encounter language, numbers, science, creativity, and problem-solving for the first time. Just as a gardener prepares the soil, educators cultivate environments rich in sensory experiences, exploration, and play. They nurture children's unique learning styles, whether visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or through reading and writing, helping them discover the world around them and themselves in it.

Research affirms what the Word of God already declared: growth is a process. According to the Cleveland Clinic, child development unfolds through physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains, each requiring intentional stimulation and guidance. Early experiences literally shape the brain’s architecture, influencing how a child learns, interacts, and thrives later in life. Similarly, studies by the Tanoto Foundation highlight that quality early care and stimulation play a vital role not only in intellectual development but also in character formation.

When early childhood educators “plant,” they do so in faith, often not seeing immediate results. The foundational lessons they teach, kindness, curiosity, resilience, and critical thinking may not bear fruit until years later when a child confidently solves a problem, shows empathy, or leads others wisely. The next group of teachers, those in the primary and secondary levels, “water” these seeds through continued instruction, structure, and reinforcement. Yet, whether planting or watering, every educator contributes to God’s process of increase.

There is beauty in recognising that our roles, though different, are equally significant. The early childhood teacher’s gentle voice encouraging a hesitant learner, the parent reading bedtime stories, and the upper-grade teacher guiding analytical thought are all instruments in God’s hand. The true transformation, however, belongs to Him. When we forget this truth, we risk anxiety, comparison, or misplaced pride. However, when we remember that God gives the increase, we can serve with peace, humility, and renewed purpose.

Education, especially in the early years, is sacred work. Each child is a seed of divine potential, and we are entrusted with the honour of tending that garden. Whether you are planting or watering, take heart, your labour is not in vain. You are participating in a divine partnership where God Himself breathes life and growth into what you nurture.

So, as we teach, guide, and inspire, let us do our part faithfully and joyfully, leaving the rest to the One who alone makes things grow.

Reflection Prayer for Educators

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the privilege of shaping young lives and planting seeds of purpose and possibility. Help us to see every child as Your divine creation , full of promise, wonder, and potential. Teach us to plant with patience, to water with love, and to trust You for the increase.

Forgive us when we try to take on the part that belongs to You alone. Remind us that while our efforts matter, the true growth comes from Your Spirit. Bless every teacher, parent, and caregiver with renewed strength, wisdom, and joy in their labour. May our classrooms be gardens of grace where learning blooms and lives are transformed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
